You can bring your paintings to life by adding in people and figures. When you learn how to paint people and animals you can transform an otherwise lifeless landscape or seascape, into a painting that tells a story, that has life and movement, and is engaging to the viewer.

Many people, especially beginners, have trouble with painting people and animals … if this is you then this is the course you will want to do.

Over the course of 4 weeks we will be breaking down how to paint realistic people and figures into a step-by-step process. Each step will be explained to you through video in great detail. You simply follow along and complete the exercises and by the end of the 4 weeks you will know exactly what you need to know to easily add in people and animals into your paintings.

Your paintings will come alive and captivate those who see them.

Here is what we will be covering over the course of 4 weeks:

Week 1 – Reference Material & Sketching

The worst thing you can do when adding people and figures into your paintings is to try and make them up in your mind. It is far better to collect lots of reference material in the form of photos. I will share with you how to go about taking your own photos to start a photo library. I will also show you how to use Google to find lots of pictures of people to use for practice.

Once we have our reference material we start our journey learning how to sketch figures. I will go through some simple exercises I do which I call my Starbucks Doodles designed to rapidly improve my ability to sketch the form. You will then complete a number of exercises to improve your sketching ability. This will train your eye which will improve your ability to paint people.

Week 2 – Tonal Painting

One of the most important aspects of painting people is getting the lights, dark’s and midtone values right. So in week 2 we will paint using just Burnt Umber and White with three values and start the process of sketching people in paint. This will teach you to see the right values in the people from your reference material.

Being able to see and paint objects in the correct values is essential to creating realistic form with all of your painting … especially with people and figures.

Week 3 – Blocking In

Now we move into using colours. I will teach you how to find the base colour and then block it in. Here we focus on the big shapes such as the t-shirt or a leg etc. We want to block in the base colour as our starting point. Our previous weeks work painting in values will help us tremendously.

Week 4 – Detailing & Highlight

Finally in week 4 we will put our finishing touches and highlights on our people and figures.

You will see them come to life in this step. We will also talk about making your people pop out from the background, and how to integrate them into the scene so they don’t look like they were cut out and pasted on.

This is an exciting time because when you master the steps in these 4 weeks your painting ability will take a quantum leap forward … it will open up new doors of possibility for you.

BONUS – 100+ Reference Photos

I have been collecting reference photos for several years now and have started to accumulate a large library of photos of people. So in week 4 I will give you access to a selection of more than 100 photos of people in different settings (ie in the city, at the beach etc) so you will have lots of reference material to keep the momentum going.

I can assure you that no matter what your skill level is right now if you follow our week by week instructions, and complete each of the simple exercises, you will improve your painting by the end of the four week course. Our unique method of teaching breaks each step down into simple easy to follow instructions that you just follow along with.
