Sometimes coding a custom solution is a better route than paying good money for a service to do it for you.
SumoMe has an entire suite of amazing tools to build your email list. In particular, I’ve had great success with the “Welcome Mat” — an opt-in box that slides down from the top of the browser, covers the entire screen and asks the visitor to provide their email address (usually in exchange for a resource, download, or incentive of some sort). Annoying? Perhaps. Effective? Ummm, YES!
The problem? Unless you dish out $20 every month for the Pro version of Welcome Mat, you’re going to have very limited functionality — in particular, you’ll have to manually download a CSV file of the subscribers collected by Welcome Mat, which you’ll then have to manually import into your email service provider for those subscribers to receive their “incentive” you promised when they originally subscribed. This is an excellent way to, let’s just say it, piss off your new subscribers!
What if somebody promised you a free tool in exchange for your email, but you never ended up receiving that free tool until a week (or a month) later when that somebody remembered to import your email into their mailing list? You’d be annoyed, and you’d no longer want that free tool, because they’ve lost your trust.
The solution? You can either pay $20 every month for Welcome Mat Pro in order to automatically add your subscribers to your email service provider… OR you can roll up your sleeves, down some espresso, and build your own version to do exactly what you want!
In this Byte-Sized Tutorial, we will rapidly plan and build our very own custom “DoorMat” in HTML, CSS and jQuery.
